A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
