Educating a Toddler to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Investment?

Child education concept
The company behind the advertisement states that what looks like "luxury or peculiarity" is actually "deliberate commitment in early-stage education".

"A household residing in north London seeks an exceptional and experienced instructor to guide their most junior child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might easily skip the phrase "beginning" as mere a turn of phrase.

But, it may be the most important element of this unique employment listing, as it attempts to find a tutor for a 12-month-old.

Hundreds of responses have since been submitted since the unnamed family advertised their request for the highly paid tutor, who must be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the post has received interest across the media, with many wondering why?

Forward-Thinking Method

Adam Caller, chief executive of Tutors International, which is supporting the family in their hunt, stated that notwithstanding first doubt, he found the idea "far sighted", and "progressive".

When he consulted the family, he mentioned they recognized the atypical character of their demand, and how immature their son is.

Nevertheless, they clarified that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that point "cultural conditioning had already become established".

But what does the family indicate by "cultural leaning"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert replied. "The manner you eat, how you speak".

He said the older sibling had adopted "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had assumed their cultural norms. The family told the consultant they wished to avoid this pattern to recur with their younger child.

The strategy: To bring in a UK tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to shape the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm say the listing has started a larger discussion about how families perceive learning, advantage and the function of home and culture in learning.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the development at the beginning here is kind of acquired indirectly," stated the CEO.

It's by means of this natural absorption that the family are aiming the child will pick up the British traits they wish to instil.

He noted the tutor had to be somebody who went to "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The educator just has to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be carrying out things they may not realize they're doing, just naturally," he said.

Expense Not a Factor

The family explained to the expert the selected educator should ideally also have familiarity of or interest in riding, winter sports, artistic pursuits and musical activities so as to influence the child in a diverse set of hobbies.

Additionally though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to register the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "horseback riding and learning an tool by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will lead to achievement and create opportunities.

"For all the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a social class indicator," he adds.

Yet, despite all this guidance in "English culture", would the child adopt alleged cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he lives with in any case?

"Yes", said Adam. "They know this could fail, but they've just taken the view of, 'we should try and we'll proceed as quickly as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he explained.

Impractical

There are some in the education sector who have those concerns.

Peter Cui, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who provides private tutors, wrote that "the journey of adopting dual cultures, or indeed, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not manufactured."

Peter wrote that he had emigrated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the period of 7 years old, and had been brought up experiencing and practicing both cultures. He progressed to study at Cambridge University.

The educator was the first individual hailing from China to be chosen to the position of Financial Officer of the university debating society.

"The concept that an individual can act as a living vessel of Britishness, an individual who can possibly transfer the qualities of a English gentleman onto a one-year-old child, strikes me as idealistic and unfeasible," he wrote.

"From my perspective, employing a quintessentially English tutor from infancy will not instantly achieve the result they desire.

"I never had such a figure, and however I have been fortunate enough to experience numerous of the situations they hope for their son."

He stated: "The fact is, cultural identity can not be forced from the outside; it must be selected, and it must be internally driven."

Purchasing UK Culture

Certainly, UK identity is something the expert thinks can be educated – and sold.

"I believe the fact that the global community holds us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
