European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
