From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.

Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release

But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.

Yet some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted

However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no new data.
