Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
