Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
