Seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
